From my understanding, blogging is more personal journaling, ranting, raving, 2-cents submitting . . . There is some interaction via readers posting comments/responses but the discussion isn't really threaded (organized topically.)

You could setup one weblog for everyone to contribute to but i believe the more efficient method of a collaborative discussion between a group would either be a listserv (via e-mail) or a forum (like fireshelby, get Darcie to show you if you haven't already experience it--warning it can be addictive to those easily tempted by gossip, ;-)
